Special Senses
Have you ever wondered what happens to you when you die?
A great many things, actually, but the first step is that you need someone like me to find you.
Sorry to disappoint all you die-hard atheists out there, but you do have a soul. Everybody does. But the soul is extremely confused when it’s first released from your body in the minutes after you die. Souls tend to panic and dash around randomly, completely freaked out by the sight of their cold, dead body lying in front of them.
On being confronted by this site, they tend to run (well, float) as fast and as far away as they can, cowering in corners of unfamiliar buildings in fear of what has happened to them. Yes, you guessed it, this is what many of you call “ghosts”. But really, they’re just what’s left of people scared and alone. And well, incorporeal, but let’s leave that aside.
This is where I come in. I, and others like me, have a knack for finding these lost souls and helping them get to the next stage of the afterlife. You could say I have a “nose for souls”, and in some ways, that’s precisely what it is. Well, in terms that those of you with the five traditional senses can understand anyway.
My soul sense perks up anytime there’s a lost soul nearby. Typically, anything up to about 200 metres. It’s hard to describe if you haven’t had the feeling yourself. It’s like a tingle down my spine, like I have walked over someone’s grave. The closer I get to the soul, the stronger the tingle. This can lead to a lot of random and pointless wandering as I attempt to locate the soul, but I haven’t not found one yet.
I’ve existed in this role for long enough to have other tricks up my sleeve besides the sense. I can often spot a trail of unintentional chaos and destruction left by a lone soul. Stories of haunted houses, sleepless nights, possessions, and constantly howling dogs often lead me closer to the real problem.
I enter a building in the dead of night, when a soul’s anguish is most profound, triggering my sense so intensely that my body shakes violently. I tiptoe around, trying not to spook the soul or any inhabitants, who have likely lived on tenterhooks whilst sharing their home with an unknown entity. Their nerves were frayed enough already.
My ears are ringing and my body is trembling, I locate the soul and talk to them gently and professionally. They are often surprised that I know they are there and can communicate with them. The soul slowly calms down, and I explain to them what will happen next.
