Close the gate on your way in
I am back from a lovely holiday in Malaysia and even though it’s a short newsletter, let’s keep the momentum going. This time it’s sustainable festivals, age restricting the internet, and more.

Discords age verification mandate is a leap toward a gated internet | The Verge
theverge.comI administer a handful of Discord servers, and while these changes don’t really affect any of those as we don’t use the features that come under this new policy, the gates of the web are slamming shut. I appreciate that age restricting certain sections of the internet makes a form of sense, but also feel that “think of the children” and “terrorists” are often excuses to sneak in wider behaviour and anyone with a modicum of knowledge or dedication will find a way around restrictions anyway. I was recently back in Australia and asked friends with children (one of whom was also a teacher) what impact the social media ban for Children had had, and he echoed much the same sensibilities. Very little impact.
