I frequently go through my archive drives to see if there are files I can no longer open, and even in the constant transfer of files from one service to another, I've lost a lot of digital media on the way. It's strange, how now it's so easy to save everything "somewhere" (but that's a whole other problem), but many of us who were there at the beginning, things are so much harder to find.
